  Student Activities: Georgia Standards
American Indian Heritage Month started out at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions made to our society by the first Americans. Using SIRS Researcher, assign students to research and report on a variety of subtopics that relate to American Indians.

What are some of the unique economic and cultural experiences of Native Americans? What is the most important contribution of Native Americans and why? What are some indicators of progress for Native Americans since the Civil Rights laws of the 1960s? Tap into SIRS Discoverer to answer these essential questions.

SIRS Interactive Citizenship: Government mentions the relationship of American Indians (in the context of section 9.3) to racial minorities. A link is provided to relatively recent pieces of landmark legislation surrounding this theme.

Georgia SIRS Stories
"The library media specialists at Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia, use the "Pro vs. Con" feature of SIRS Researcher to help teach critical thinking."

"They work with teachers in social studies, language arts, to design lessons in which students debate a controversial social issue. Their students use the topic overviews to understand the basic arguments, then analyze the sources provided to develop a position and support it in persuasive writing and speaking."
