Two years ago, SIRS initiated this series of fine prints to
recognize and honor the essential role public libraries play in our
culture. Today, many of these prints grace the walls of libraries
across the country.
The artist for the collection is Joe Davis, whose work has been
widely exhibited throughout the United States and Japan. His
illustrations have appeared in THE NEW YORKER, THE NEW YORK OBSERVER
and many other national publications. Davis was also commissioned to
provide paintings for the Steven Spielberg movie, BATTERIES NOT
INCLUDED.
The prints in the series to date include:
- 1) The Library Company of Philadelphia, America's First Lending
Library, Founded in 1731
- 2) The Peterborough Town Library in New Hampshire, The Oldest
Free Library in the U.S., 1833
- 3) The Ottendorfer, New York City's First Free Public Library,
1884
- 4) The Bookmobile, Louisiana Bookmobile, circa 1950
- 5) Dr. Eugene Clark Library, Oldest Continually Operating
